Rouget’s Echezeaux was the most brooding and reserved wine in the cellar when I tasted it in October 2017, but its considerable potential is already apparent. Notes of smoky black fruit, bonfire, spice and truffle are framed by some lavish new oak, preceding a full-bodied, deep wine with considerable mid-palate volume, vibrant fruit and good concentration. Rouget declares that this Echezeaux personifies ‘mastered power’, and it’s hard to disagree.
